Columbia's Profiles in Giving
Anne Youle Stein

A grateful patient who, as a young woman, worked at the Neurological Institute at CPMC, Anne Youle Stein has become a major donor to the medical center. After being treated by Dr. Nas Ser Eftekhar, P&S professor of clinical orthopedic surgery, she developed a special interest in orthopedic surgery. This resulted in her establishment of the Anne Youle Stein Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery, a resource to strengthen an already nationally acclaimed program.

In 1965, following the death of her husband, Everett, Mrs. Stein began investing in the stock market, based on her own instincts and research. Her endeavors met with success that she has generously shared with CPMC. In addition to the Stein Professorship, she has made provision for the Everett Stein and Anne Youle Stein Center for Orthopaedic Education and Research. The center, which will cover an entire floor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, provides space for many interlocking elements needed to advance knowledge about the field. It will encompass administrative and faculty offices, research labs, teaching areas, conference rooms, and sites for specialized technological training as well as a media center, the Eftekhar Documentation Center, and the distinguished collection of the Russell Hibbs Library. State-of-the-art resources will offer a working environment for the development of long-term research on orthopedic surgery patient treatment and outcomes. Electronic information systems, digitizing equipment for translating X-rays into computerized images, and a variety of audiovisual tools for the preparation and publication of research projects will be among the cutting-edge tools available to those working in the department.
